Pedaling to prosperity and cleaner environment IDEI strategy to Sustainable Development

IDEI’s commitment to dissemination of low cost irrigation technologies for enhancing the productivity and income of poor farmers in India is in line with the Millennium Development Goal’s (MDGs) for reducing poverty and hunger.

In areas with abundant groundwater, small farmers hire diesel pumps on rent with high recurring costs to draw ground water which results in huge quantity of Carbon Emission (There are 8 million diesel pumps in India). IDEI promoted Treadle Pump (TP) is an environmentally safe technology, and does not use any fossil fuel or Green House Gases (GHGs) emitting fuel. TP introduction has replaced or substituted diesel-hiring system in a number of households in eastern India leading to significant amount of diesel savings and Emission Reduction. It has also brought additional land under irrigation that was earlier dependent on rain.

Treadle Pump

The Treadle Pump is a foot-operated water lifting device similar in principle to the hand pump, which uses a bamboo, a PVC or flexible pipe for suction to pump water from shallow aquifers (up-to 25 feet) or surface water bodies. It performs best at a pumping head of 3.0-3.5 m delivering 1-1.2 litres per second. One person, whether a man, woman or even a child, can operate the pump by manipulating his/her body weight on two treadles and by holding a bamboo or wooden frame for support.

Distribution of treadle pump:

The Treadle Pumps are manufactured by licensed independent enterprise under the strict quality assurance supervision of IDEI, and distribution through a network of distributors and dealers from the private sector.

Emission Reduction

The Emission Reduction is quantified at 150,000 tCO2e for pumps sold between April 2001 till March 2004. The volume of Emission Reduction available for the project is expected to increase manifold in the years to come. The entire project is estimated to generate more than 800,000 tCO2e in its lifetime. These credits are available for sale in the form of Verified Emission Reduction (VER) at the current stage.
